Socialism and Workers’ Politics – Oh Se-cheol

The charm of studying abroad might be the opportunity to examine the underlying ideologies from the perspective of a third-country educational institution, looking at other countries. Especially for books belonging to categories not guaranteed diversity of thought due to seductive measures within certain regimes, a major benefit is the ability to look into the sensitive issues they address with raw, vivid thinking. Moreover, despite being nearly 20 years since its publication in 2004, the opportunity to read a first edition, first printing in pristine condition, untouched and still smelling new, is an added bonus.

Discussing ideologies is tricky in a national atmosphere sensitive to political ideologies where speaking out is often restrained. Even the rulers receive criticism from opposing sides when they express personal opinions in the media. I was a Smurf, through and through, with blue blood oozing from my core. The tower of intellect would not exist without dialectical synthesis, and with a firm belief, I found sounds coming from a distance in my logical territory intriguing.

The book presents the direction and prospects for the continuity of the Korean socialist movement, still oppressed by division and laws like the National Security Law. The socialist movement itself is a struggle to achieve political and ideological freedom and an alternative societal construction overcoming capitalism, and settling for utilitarianism or left-wing block theory is akin to defeatism and a display of incapability abandoning socialist practices. Such sectarianism is to be overcome, and those who claim to be socialists are encouraged to lead in breaking down these barriers and practicing revolutionary socialist movements.

I stop to think. It’s not easy to clear circuits that have been accumulating for over a decade, but for a moment, I attempt to erase everything and write down their positions from a new standpoint. The passing sentences stirred more intensely than expected.

“We are well aware of the world history where the late 1920s’ Great Depression led to fascism and World War II. The downfall of the socialist bloc, which had maintained the balance of the system and restrained imperialist wars, facilitated the rightward shift during the outburst of suppressed nationalism, promoting nationalistic militarism and fascist ideology. … Standing at the dawn of revolution, for the youths conditioned and stifled by the capitalist system, and further, for the working class and the people of this land who should step forward as seeds of revolution, and indeed for the global working class and people, Mr. Baek urges you to lead in creating the world of Nolnamagi he dreams of. Do not wait for the young people.”

독서광인 내게 유학 생활의 묘미라고나 할까, 제삼국 교육 기관의 위치에서 타국을 바라보는 시선으로 배경 이념을 검토할 기회를 찾을 수 있다.
특히 이처럼 특정 정권 내에서의 회유적 제제로 사고 다양성의 보장을 받지 못한 부류의 서적일수록, 그것이 다루는 예민한 문제를 날것 그대로 원색적 사고로 들여다볼 수 있다는 점이 큰 혜택이다.
더하여, 2004년 출판된 지 20여년 가까이 된 책임에도, 출간 그대로의 손때 하나 묻지 않은 상태의 제1판 1쇄본을 새책 냄새를 맡으며 읽을 수가 있는 것은 덤이다.

정치 이념에 민감한 사회 분위기의 여파로 쉽게 소리내지 못하는 국가 시대상 속에서 사상을 논의하기는 까다롭다. 위정자들마저 언론에서 개인 주장을 피력하면 언제나 반측의 지탄을 받는다. 나는 골수부터 파란 피가 배어나오는 스머프였다. 지성의 금자탑은 정반합이 없었다면 존재하지 않았을 것이란 굳은 신념과 함께, 나의 논리 영토에서 먼 거리에서 전해오는 소리일수록 흥미롭게 들었다.

책은, 여전히 분단과 국가보안법 등으로 인해 탄압의 대상이 되고 있는 한국 사회주의 운동의 특수성 속에서 지속 방향과 전망을 제시한다. 사회주의 운동 자체는 정치, 사상의 자유를 쟁취하는 운동이며 자본주의를 극복하는 대안 사회 건설 운동이기에 활용론이나 좌파 블록론으로 안주하는 것은 패배주의와 같고 사회주의적 실천을 방기하는 무능력의 표현이기도 하다. 이러한 종파성은 타파 대상이며 사회주의자를 자임하는 자는 이 질서의 장벽을 타파하는데 앞장서 혁명적 사회주의 운동을 실천할 것을 권한다.

생각을 멈춘다. 십여년 축적된 회로를 비우는 것은 쉽지 않은 일이지만 잠시나마 최대한 백지화를 하고 새로운 입지에서 그들의 입장을 써내려가 본다. 스치우는 문장들이 예상보다 강렬히 요동했다.

”1920년대 말 세계 공황이 파시즘과 제2차 세계 대전으로 이어졌던 세계 역사를 우리는 잘 알고 있습니다. 그나마 이러한 제국주의 전쟁을 억제하고 체제의 균형을 지켰던 사회주의 진영의 몰락은 억압되었던 민족주의가 분출하는 과정에서 우경화되어 민족주의적 부국강병론, 파시즘적 이데올로기를 촉진시켰습니다. … 혁명의 새벽에 서서 자본주의 체제에 길들여져 찌들어 가는 젊은이들을 위하여, 나아가 혁명의 알기로 나서야 할 이 땅의 노동자 계급과 민중, 아니 나아가 전 세계 노동자 계급과 민중과 함께 백 선생이 염원하는 노나메기 세상을 만드는 데 앞장서십시오. 젊은이들을 기다리지 마십시오.“
